   Some words about our Lenses

A Statement by Dr. Sydney J Bush PhD.,D.Opt, IOSc (London)

"Prospective patients will be interested to know that I have personally worn soft contact lenses night and day,  sleeping and waking,  24 hours/day since March 1992, changing them regularly and with less than a month of spectacle wearing in all this time. Many of my patients do the same."

LASER eye surgery. People ask our  opinion.

http://www-psy.ucsd.edu/~mm/eyeknowwhy/
Click on this site for what is probably the most informative and impartial (though self admittedly rather negative) account of all the procedures and you will realise why, with approximately 50 complications ( and no emphasis on resultant structural weakness varying from 10% to 0ver 30% weakening with danger of rupture of the eyeball in accidents- e.g.airbags)  it is entitled...
I Know Why Refractive Surgeons Wear Glasses...  Briefly -

Whilst it can be justified for some extreme cases,
after initial enthusiasm, many eye surgeons have abandoned the laser as tragic, failed operations result in permanent damage to sight. Many Police forces, Emergency services,  the US Military, and  Airlines  ban it.

For 24 hr lens wearers  like myself, any advantage is hard to find if lifelong fine tuning of focus is desirable, especially when reading help becomes increasingly necessary.

Many (after initially persuading themselves and others they were happy) now greatly regret it and worry about the irreversible structural weakness of their eyes in the event of blows to the eye, car accidents etc.
Rupture of the eye  is uncompromisingly final.

Contact Lenses  and Us...
I now find it hard to believe that I was the first in the UK to offer ultra low cost contact lenses (1/2 the normal price) and also simultaneously frequent, planned replacement lenses by standing order.  These principles have since been adopted nationally to become Standard Practice in the UK.

At that time a unique clinic, systems & video films made in-house were introduced  to save time explaining and demonstrating.  This made quite exceptional standards of care possible in order to avoid all criticism from colleagues,  very upset at losing patients coming from all over Britain to save money.  The principle was and is  "Watching and learning from TV saves our time and your money"

Sadly, in a competitive world, many single handed practitioners without the architecture and facilities of specialised equipment were forced to fight back on price alone. We regret this but at the same time our low cost contact lens system  brought lens wearing to the masses back in 1984.

INTERNET LENS PURCHASES
After we introduced  regular frequent changes of lens power which are surprisingly often needed with changes of lifestyle, job  and health, we found that truly massive stocks of lenses of all fittings and powers were needed and that these have a short shelf life due to 'use by' dates  of bacteriological safety.

People buying lenses on the internet  overlook this and find it  a costly problem forgetting that for their membership of a plan, we expect to change their lens powers  and fittings as often as necessary as a matter of routine at no extra cost whatever! It is uncommon for people to stay on the same power and fitting.

A complete contact lens eye examination for an unregistered  patient  can cost £85. A lesser check without the benefit of specialised equipment which will not cover endothelium, oedema  or retinal and general  health might cost £25.

FREE TRIALS
In this world one generally gets what one pays for yet our One Month Free Trials
(10 year tested) are always  free,  without obligation and with no deposit to have to ask to be returned! We even  give free trials of some toric lenses ! In fact we do everything we can to save you from the significant risk of irreversible damage  caused by the laser.  This you could have to wake up to every day for the rest of your life.

BACK UP SPECTACLES £25?
YES - for ALL lens wearers!
A choice is available for ALL  Contact Lens wearers   from  over 100 styles. (+/-6.00D)
Rimless £35 !!! We haven't the heart to charge the proper price of £70 to £110 knowing you won't be wearing them very much !

Points to consider when choosing  a  practice:-

1.  Does the practice specialise in contact lenses?
2.  Will your  eyes be examined every 3 to 6 months as appropriate?
3.  Is  a  video microscope available for better examination and training?
4.  Will you be able to  see vital features for yourself via image capture?
5.  Has it an electronic microscope for essential endothelial examinations?
6.  Will your eyes be fluorescein checked regularly?
7.  Will your focus and vision be checked at EVERY visit?
8.  Can they match our  usual 25,000 lens stock for INSTANT changes?
9.  Is there a top of the range automated electronic vision  and focus check?
10. Is there an electronic retinal camera to reveal heart disease, diabetes,   glaucoma, nutritional deficiency etc, also allowing you to see for yourself?

AND LASTLY... Will you enjoy  variable period disposability (Gold Plan) ?

What lens type, fitting size and strength (and HOW MANY) will you need after your next check?  Our lens bank managers wish we could know in advance!

The majority of our patients now change their lenses WEEKLY,  TWO WEEKLY, TWICE WEEKLY and a smaller number DAILY.
